When too much alcohol is consumed, the likelihood of a hangover the next day increases significantly. The hangover tends to rear its ugly head after all the alcohol has left the body and the signs of this condition include a loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness, thirst, and a headache.

A bit of research online provides an individual with several potential hangover cures; however, the proof of their effectiveness is limited at best. Don’t worry: there are some proven ways to reduce the potential of a hangover and cure the symptoms once they show up.

  1. Avoid High Congeners Drinks

Toxic chemicals that include methanol, acetone, and isopentanol, congeners are really one of the main culprits of a hangover. In fact, alcoholic drinks with higher levels of congeners are proven to increase the intensity and frequency of hangovers.

Put simply, by drinking more alcohol, a person’s metabolism of methanol is affected, which is a well-known congener found in small amounts in certain drinks. After a person drinks, their body converts the methanol into formaldehyde, an extremely toxic substance. Some believe formaldehyde is responsible for some hangover symptoms.

When the person drinks more alcohol after a night of heavy drinking, it can inhibit the conversion process, preventing the formation of formaldehyde. As a result, hangover symptoms are reduced or eliminated altogether.

  1. Consume A Lot of Water

As a diuretic, alcohol makes a person have to urinate often. As a result, the consumption of alcohol can contribute to cases of dehydration.

While dehydration isn’t a primary cause of hangovers, it can contribute to some of the symptoms, such as dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and thirst. Avoiding dehydration is fairly simple. All a person needs to do is drink plenty of water.

When out drinking, try to consume a glass of water, or some other non-alcoholic beverage, in between the alcoholic drinks. Also, have a large glass of water before going to sleep.

  1. Get Plenty of Sleep

After drinking, getting a good night’s sleep is challenging to say the least. Alcohol can impair a person’s sleep quality, as well as the duration of their sleep.

While poor sleep isn’t a cause of hangover symptoms, it can contribute to the fatigue and the irritability that often goes along with them.
